Maria The Mute is based on the character, “Maria The Mute” from Camila Sosa Villada’s, Las Malas. She is a powerful maternal character in the story. Maria is one of the prime caregivers of the baby this family of trans women brings into their home. One night though, she was found turning into a bird. Misspelled and distressedly written notes are found all over her room proclaiming that no man will ever love her like this. She is bleeding and crying from both emotional and physical pain. This piece captures that transformation. It is an emotion and a fear most trans women know all too well, will I ever be able to find someone who could love me for who I am?
